Hambaeksan & Manhangjae

At 1,330 metres, Manhangjae is Korea's highest mountain pass accessible by car. In winter, its trees are covered in snow and frost.

The pass lies where Gohan-eup in Jeongseon, Hyeol-dong in Taebaek and Sangdong-eup in Yeongwol meet.

Near Hambaeksan (1,573 m), Korea's sixth-highest mountain, the pass opens onto views of the Baekdudaegan ridges. Forests and wildflowers bring changing scenery: blossoms in spring and summer, and snow in winter.

Jeongamsa Temple (Sumano Pagoda)

According to tradition, Master Jajang founded this temple in the 12th year of Queen Seondeok's reign after receiving relics of the Buddha from Manjusri on Mount Wutai in Tang China. It is one of Korea's five major shrines housing Buddha relics, alongside Sangwonsa, Tongdosa, Beopheungsa and Bongjeongam.

Rather than a Buddha statue, the temple enshrines relics in the Sumano Pagoda behind the main grounds. Tradition says Jajang brought its agate stones from Tang China with the Dragon King's help; the character for water was added to its name to mark that story.

The temple's modest, orderly grounds invite a quiet mind. Known as a place to pray for wishes, it attracts many visitors around the New Year and examination season.

Untangodo Trail

This trail network crosses Yeongwol, Jeongseon, Taebaek and Samcheok in Gangwon State. Its name means “high coal transport road”, recalling the routes once used to carry coal.

It is promoted as Untangodo 1330, named after the 1,330-metre elevation of Manhangjae, the highest point along the route.

The source guide describes seasonal fire-prevention closures in autumn (around October–December) and spring (around January–May). Apart from open sections such as routes 1 and 2 and some urban stretches, many sections may be accessible for only about half the year.

Mindungsan (Doline)

At 1,119 metres, Mindungsan is a favourite for autumn silver-grass walks and hikes reached by train. Its slopes are so thick with silver grass that it is often called the silver-grass mountain.

Shrubs and woodland cover the lower slopes, while the summit is almost treeless. Gentle slopes and sweeping autumn silver-grass fields attract many hikers.

The grass can grow taller than a person and is dense away from the paths. Maintained trails make the ascent accessible, and the doline landform is a popular photo spot.

The park is at Saebijae in Jodong-ri, Sindong-eup. Here, Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun's characters buried a time capsule beneath a pine tree and promised to meet again three years later in the 2001 film, a hit across Korea, China, Hong Kong and Japan.

Dorongi Pond

The trails pass through old-growth forest and, in places, former coal transport and logging roads from the 1970s and 1980s, recalling the area's past.

Dorongi Pond is a highlight of the Haneul-gil trails, at the end of the 3.6 km Haneulmaji-gil from Mountain Condo. It formed when the ground subsided during anthracite mining at Dongwon Mine in the 1970s and 1980s.

The pond is roughly 150 metres around. Several ponds of different sizes formed in this area as a result of mining.
